Local and Indigenous councils on Cape York Peninsula, in far north Queensland, are cooperating to keep a successful pest eradication program going.
The Cape York Weeds and Feral Animals Project is in jeopardy after shortfalls in government funding.
Cook Shire mayor Bob Sullivan says the program has benefited numerous communities across the Cape and its premature end would be a great loss.
"For this to go under at this stage is almost unthinkable, and it will be very hard to get it going again if we can't keep this program up and running," he said.
"I mean, almost every community on Cape York has benefited from it through training, through improved skills, through knowledge of what are the problem weeds and the problem animals on the cape."
